Mbeki serious about crime - Presidency
January 17, 2007 Edition 4
President Thabo Mbeki is serious about crime and doesn't feel the government has lost control of the problem. This was presidential spokesperson Mukoni Ratshitanga's response after South Africans responded with indignation to Mbeki's alleged inference during a televised interview on Monday that crime wasn't of concern. "To say crime is not out of control does not mean he does not intend to deal seriously with crime," Ratshitanga said. "Nobody can show that the overwhelming majority of South Africans feel that crime is not under control; nobody can because it is not true," Mbeki said on the Tim Modise Show. Callers to radio chat shows yesterday felt he was out of touch with reality. - Political Bure
